Commercials like Abilify

I started thinking about commercials and all the advertisements regarding bipolar after I read Philip Dawdy's blog, Furious Seasons, about his own thoughts on the matter. What gets me the most about these commercials is not the scenery, but the fact that they list all the harmful side effects like it's no big deal. And in a calm soothing voice. Like your listening to a meditation CD. Like you're going to instantly be better if you tried Abilify. Like it would make your life seem like a brisk, invigorating, yet a calming fucking walk in the woods. It infuriates me and irritates and pisses me off to see the same fucking commercial day in and day out.

It didn't work like that for me. It made me eat like a pig for days. I was starving for days, no matter what I ate. I wanted potatoes and bread, stuff that I had been trying to avoid to lose weight. After seven days of this I decided to get off the ride to the insane asylum. I called my doctor and told that no way, no how was I going to go down that road again. The drug reminded me of zyprexa and seroquel. It was NOT for me. I already have diabetes, thank you.

Try to ignore the stupid comments here and watch the ad that I was describing.

I completely understand where you are coming from, but what do you say when someone does well on medication? Yes, medication is being over prescribed to make drug companies money, but there are plenty of people that the drug companies are helping regardless of the fact that they don't care about people and are in it for the money. Can we stop them from selling medication? Where do we draw the line?

I consistently get frustrated when I see people who need to be on meds choose to not take them, but the drug companies shouldn't be telling them what they should take. Their doctors should

It use to be that in the U.S. commercials for prescription medication were illegal, I wish we'd go back to that. Each one implies they are the happy pill to end all sadness. "Take this pill and it will be a sunny spring day every day!"

I say good for you if it works for you. But, I don't want to see any more propaganda that suggests that this is the most beneficial med out there. I think Bradley has the right idea. No more prescription ads. Ads are deceiving and promise white sand beaches. One should make an educated decision on these meds. Do research on the net, talk to your doctor. Be mindful of your choice.
